iGaming Glossary

The online casino and iGaming sector is filled with specialized jargon and technical acronyms. Whether you're an operator integrating new software or a player trying to understand game mechanics, our comprehensive glossary breaks down the most important terms you need to know.

A-E

API (Application Programming Interface)

The code that allows two software programs to communicate. In iGaming, an API is how an online casino connects to a game provider's servers to display games to players seamlessly.

Aggregator

A company that bundles games from dozens of different game providers into a single API integration, saving casino operators time and technical resources.

F-R

GGR (Gross Gaming Revenue)

The core metric of casino profitability. It represents the total amount of money wagered by players minus the total amount paid out as winnings, before deducting operating expenses.

RNG (Random Number Generator)

A complex algorithm used in casino games to ensure that the outcome of every spin, card deal or dice roll is completely random and unpredictable. Independent auditors test RNGs to ensure fairness.

RTP (Return to Player)

Expressed as a percentage, RTP dictates how much of all wagered money a specific game will pay back to players over time. For example, a slot with a 96% RTP will theoretically return $96 for every $100 wagered over millions of spins.

S-Z

Volatility (or Variance)

A measure of the risk associated with a particular casino game. High volatility games pay out less frequently but offer larger potential wins, whereas low volatility games pay out smaller amounts more frequently.

White Label

A complete, out-of-the-box casino platform provided by a B2B company. The client (operator) simply adds their branding and marketing, while the white-label provider handles licenses, game integrations and payment processing.
